Do I really need rain pants? (also asked as: What will the weather be?)

The weather, in conjunction with a handful of other variable conditions, has its own term, “The Alaska Factor.” Climbers, backpackers, hunters, fisherman, miners, and anyone else who spends a decent chunk of time in the Far North will tell you how quickly the conditions can change.

Pray for blue skies, prepare for rain. You will get some of both.

Weather is the primary element of surprise on our trips. BA guides are outfitted with expedition ready gear that can withstand the elements in relative comfort. Weather can range from hot, sunny, and calm to torrential downpours to snow. As the climate changes we are seeing more unpredictability during our trips and plan accordingly. Please refer to our gear list for more info on necessary gear/clothing. Also keep in mind the gear list was curated after hundreds of days in the backcountry and is constantly being refined as gear options evolve over the years. If you have specific questions about what you already own and wonder if it will make the cut for your trip please reach out directly and we can talk you through it.

I have a sensitive stomach or strong feelings about my food - can you still feed me?

We are more than happy to work with your food allergies/dietary restrictions to the best of our ability. Our founder, Kathryn, found out she cannot eat many of the backpacking staples (almonds, cashews, wheat, eggs…) and has since made it her mission to think outside the box when it comes to the backcountry bistro.

Please notify us at least 60 days prior to departure to ensure we can adequately address your specific dietary needs.

More on our food can be found HERE.

I have health issues that I’m nervous will prevent me from joining an adventure - what should I know?

As discussed on our page we are often a plane ride away from the nearest medical facilities/emergency medical personnel and it is imperative you are honest with your guides, and yourself, about your capacity to be away from such facilities.

With that said if you are regularly active and have spoken with a doctor about your condition it is likely you will be able to join us for an adventure. Please call or email us to talk through which trip may be best suited for you.

Guides are ultimately liable for their groups’ safety and may prohibit participation if deemed unsafe to the group or the guest. Please contact us directly if you have any questions regarding your fitness. Failure to disclose medical issues that result in the inability of a guest to complete/participate in a trip will not receive a refund.
